Netspot is an application used for surveying wireless networks. In the context of wireless network testing, Netspot is used to identify ad-hoc wireless networks and potential rogue wireless devices within the customer facility. Using Netspot effectively within a multi-tenant facility can be challenging because devices will be detected in floors above or below the target area or in adjacent offices. A side-effect of testing with Netspot is that customers are left with a map of wireless signal strength within the tested facility.
Netspot is individually licensed and can be obtained from https://www.netspotapp.com/. The application supports MAC and Windows devices and is capable of being run on a virtual machine without issue.
Prior to surveying, the tester must obtain a map of the facility for import into the Netspot application. After having obtained maps, a new project is created and the map is added as a new facility/floor in the project.
